Diet Pepsi No More

Let me start by confessing this, I have not confessed to anyone before now, other than the doctor, that I drank almost 2 litres of Diet Pepsi PER DAY. I never used to be a Pepsi drinker, when I met my husband I was a juice drinker and he was a pepsi drinker. After so long together I unknowingly became a Pepsi drinker. We eventually switched to Diet Pepsi to save calories, after talking to our doctor we realized that was a bad choice. After years of drinking Diet Pepsi, I quit. That’s right, I quit. I dropped my almost 2 litre of diet pepsi habit just. Like. That.

Now it wasn’t easy, I tried several times. I talked about it over and over with my husband. But I could never do it. It was a habit, I missed it when it wasn’t there. I knew that I could give it up, I mean I quit smoking, twice. (Yeah, lets not talk about that). So I knew I could quit the diet pepsi also, it was just a matter of time.

My body doesn’t usually feel good, and I thought the diet pepsi was contributing to the issues, I knew I needed to kick the habit. So one day, I stopped drinking the diet pepsi. Yep, just like that. I didn’t tell a single person, not my husband, not my mother, no one. I just did it. The same way I quit smoking, I didn’t tell a single person, it seems easier that way. My husband knew, just like he knew then, he guessed and watched what I was doing but he didn’t say anything. He just waited for me to bring it up, to tell him I had accomplished it.

So lets talk about how you go from drinking almost 2 litres of diet pepsi a day to drinking none. It is hard! I was a week into it, when I had to go to the doctor, I thought I was dying. I went cold turkey, from 2 litres to nothing. I had headaches, the shakes, dizziness, nausea, and was so tired I could hardly keep my eyes open. I thought I was supposed to feel better not worse. When I went into the doctor she kind of laughed at me (we have that kind of relationship) and asked why I would go cold turkey. In hindsight I should have cut back SLOWLY, but I don’t do anything SLOWLY. But none the less, she was very proud of me for kicking the habit. My withdrawal lasted 2 whole weeks, it was awful.

That was six weeks ago and I don’t miss it. Not at all! I have had the occasional can of pop, however I would like to get to a point where I don’t drink it at all. One of my mini goals this week is to drink more water, since getting rid of the pop, I don’t drink nearly as much as I should.

That is my story of being a Diet Pepsi addict.
