My love of cloth diapers began when I was pregnant with my second baby. I wanted to use them but was ridiculed so much by my friends that I ended up not going ahead with Cloth diapering as I had planned.
Fast forward a few years and I was pregnant with my third baby and again was thinking of using Cloth Diapers. When I mentioned it to friends and family this time I was prepared for the comments and there were lots of comments but I went along with a “whatever” attitude and did as I wanted to do.
I have been successfully cloth diapering now for about 15 months and have stuck with it for the most part. I have, once or twice, used disposables just to have a break from the care routine that comes along with cloth diapering. But for the most part it hasn’t been that bad at all.
A lot of people are concerned about the start-up costs that are involved with cloth diapering but, like with everything else, there are cheaper versions, more expensive versions, and then the all the ones in between. Myself I have only used the cheaper diapers, costing me about $5.00 a piece, I have loved these diapers. But I also know that you can buy diapers that are upwards of $40.00 a piece. It is all about what you are willing to spend on them. In some area there are also organizations that you can contact and they will help you to get started with cloth diapering by sending you out are care package of cloth diapers and cloth wipes.
My initial start-up cost was not much, I asked my friends and family to help me purchase the diapers that I would need for the new baby. If I had of paid my own way it wouldn’t have been that much. It is recommended that you have between 18 and 24 diapers and at about $5.00 each, it would have been between $90.00 and $120.00. Had I have chosen more expensive diapers it could have been much, much more. If you think of how much you will have to pay for disposable diapers over the course of your babies life, the cost of the cloth diapers is not that much.
All in all, I am very happy I did what I wanted and I would recommend cloth diapering to everyone who was considering it. Have you ever cloth diapered or are you considering doing it in the future?
